Rules and Permissions relating to TV, Film, and Photography Shoots at the Tottori Sand Dunes

At Tottori Sand Dunes, prior notification is required for drone flights, filming and photography by bringing in props and filming equipment (including cosplays).

Newspapers, TV, magazines, and other media are also required to notify the Tottori Sand Dunes Visitor Center in advance, who wish to film or take photographs in Tottori Sand Dunes.

Please use the inquiry mail form on the website or the application form, and submit the form to the Tottori Sand Dunes Visitor Center.

Please try to submit notification one week before you would like to film or take photos at Tottori Sand Dunes.

Please note that the information submitted will be shared with the relevant organizations, ①and ② below.

Depending on the shooting content, such as using large-scale equipment for shooting, permission from the Natural Park Law and the Cultural Properties Protection Law is required.

Can I fly a drone over Tottori Sand Dunes?

Notification form is required in advance for drone flights in the Tottori Sand Dunes. However, please refrain from drone flying and practice by beginners. (There are many tourists and it is difficult to control the drone with wind from the sea and sand in the dunes.)

Please drop in at the reception counter of Tottori Sand Dunes Visitor Center before shooting.

 

About flying drones in the dunes… Regarding flying drones in the Tottori Sand Dunes is prohibited by the “Ordinance to Protect and Care the best Tottori Sand Dunes in Japan” from causing harm or fear to people.

Flight is possible when the wind speed is 5 meters or less

You can check the current wind speed with  TOTTORI SAKYU NAVI

The distance between the aircraft and the pilot is limited to about 100 meters, limited to the visible range

Check for the presence of a third party.

Keep enough distance between third party and drone

 

The following acts are also prohibited under the Aviation Law unless approved by the Osaka Aviation Bureau.

Flying drones during night time and out of sight.

When maintaining a certain operating distance is less than 30 meters between the drone and the persons or properties.

Operate drones over event sites where many people gather.

Transport hazardous materials such as explosives by drones.

Drop any objects from the drone.

 

* Drones are not allowed to fly during the busiest holiday period in Japan, Bon Festival in mid-August and Golden Week starting from the end of April to the beginning of May, as many tourists come. We appreciate your understanding.

General

Are there showers in the Tottori Sand Dunes?

There are coin-opened how showers ( 100 yen for 3 minutes) in the “Sakyu Kaikan” located on the other side of the Visitor Center.  *Not available during winter.

The Tottori Sand Dunes Visitor Center has an outdoor resting area with free foot showers and kid’s showers. ( Available: 9:00-17:00)

And you will find the hot spring “Sakyu Onsen Fureai Kaikan” head about 3km east from the Visitor Center.

 

Can I go to the sand dunes with shoes?

You can go with your shoes, but sand may get into your shoes.

■Rubber boots – Available for rent at the “Sakyu Kaikan” located on the other side of the Visitor Center. There is no worry of sand getting into boots.

■Sandals – Free rental sandals are available in the Tottori Sand Dunes Visitor Center corridor. Store your shoes in your car or use a coin locker.

Sandals are not available for rental in winter and the summer when the surface temperature of sand is too high.

The number of boots and sandals is limited. We do not accept footwear reservation.

 

Can we meet the camels every day?

Camel Riding Experience may be closed irregularly, and camels may take days off depending on the weather.

 

Is there Wi-Fi service?

Free Wi-Fi is available in Tottori Sand Dunes.

Can I swim along the coast of the Tottori Sand Dunes?

Swimming along the coast of the Tottori Sand Dunes is prohibited by the “Ordinance to Protedct and Care the best Tottori Sand Dunes in Japan”.

 

Lost and Found ( Lost properties)

Prease contact the Tottori Sand Dunes Visitor Center for lost properties in and around the dunes.

 

I want to sled at the Tottori Sand Dunes

There are no restrictions on the use of sleds in the Tottori Sand Dunes, but there are some precautions.

・Can only sled on the east side of Umanose (Horse’s Back).
・Pay attention before sledding to those who experience sandboarding.
・Please take sleds and cardboards home with you.

Can I bring my pets?

In the Tottori Sand Dunes, you can enter with your pets on a leash. Pet owners are responsible for collecting and disposing of their pet’s waste.

In the Tottori Sand Dunse Visitor Center, you can enter with your Guide dogs. Please note other general pets are not allowed to enter to visitor center even in your arms.

There are no admission restrictions on Tottori Sand Dunes. Open 24 hours.

■Tottori Sand Dunes Parking Lot

There are no admission restrictions on the parking lot. You may enter and leave day and night.

Is there a parking lot?

Please use “Tottori Sand Dunes Parking Lot” ( in front of the visitor center), there is no dedicated parking at the visitor center.

*There is no entrance/exit gate in the parking lot so you may enter and leave day and night.

Does the Visitor Center have somewhere to eat a bringing packed lunch?

Your packed lunches can be eaten in the outdoor resting area with a roof.

There is no space for lunch inside the visitor center.

 

1F (Indoor resting area)  –  Only drinks allowed

2F (Exhibition zones, Study corner, and Library)  –  No food and drink allowed

 

Services

Regarding free sandals and boots for rent

Due to the effects of the COVID-19 infections, the lending of boots and sandals has been suspended.

Wheelchairs

There are free wheelchair rental services available at the reception counter of the Tottori Sand Dunes Visitor Center.

 The terrace where you can get the whole panoramic view of the Tottori Sand Dunes can be accessed by the wooden slope from the Tottori Sand Dunes Parking Lot. The usual wheelchair can be reached up to the terrace. Driving on the sand will not proceed unless you use a special wheelchair for sand dunes.
